Many people choose ClearCorrect or Invisalign because of the discreet, clear-plastic, low-profile design. While the aligners are virtually unnoticeable, they won’t stay that way if they aren’t cared for properly. What can you do to ensure you maintain clear aligners? Here are 6 simple and easy-to-follow tips from a local dentist!
#1 – Remove and Clean the Aligners in the Morning
Because your clear aligners must be worn at least 22 hours a day, you’ll need to sleep in them at night. That means billions of bacteria will accumulate while you’re resting. When you wake-up in the morning, be sure to remove the trays so you can clean and soak them while you perform your normal dental hygiene routine.
#2 – Rinse the Aligners with Each Removal
Every time you remove your aligners, you should rinse them under cool water. This will help prevent the buildup of dried saliva and plaque. You can also use clear anti-bacterial soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the aligners.
#3 – Soak the Aligners
Set aside around 15 minutes each day to soak the aligners in a denture cleaner or cleaning solution specifically made for ClearCorrect or Invisalign. After soaking them, you can use an extra toothbrush with soft bristles to remove any debris that may have accumulated. You’ll finish by rinsing the trays before reinserting them in your mouth.
#4 – Don’t Abandon Your Aligners
Leaving your aligners laying around is a recipe for disaster. Instead, be sure to always store them in the case that is provided for you. This will prevent them from accumulating bacteria and getting damaged. To be on the safe side, always keep your storage case handy.
#5 – Plan Carefully for Trips
Typically, you’ll switch aligner trays every two weeks. That means you’ll need to plan in advance before taking a trip. Therefore, you won’t risk interrupting your treatment and even experiencing regression. If you know that you’ll be taking an extended trip, be sure to pack the next pair of trays so that you’ll have them when it’s time to make a switch.
#6 – Remove Your Aligners Before Eating or Drinking
As a general rule, you should never eat with your aligner trays still inserted. Furthermore, the only liquid that’s okay to drink while wearing your clear trays is water. Before drinking anything else, you should remove the trays. Otherwise, you could be facing a break, stain or some other form of damage.
Both ClearCorrect and Invisalign provide a way to experience a more confident future by conveniently and discreetly fixing your smile. By following the above guidelines, you can soon experience the happiness that having a new-and-improved smile brings!
