When you have stubborn stains that toothbrushing can’t remove, teeth whitening provides an effective solution. Once you’ve had your teeth whitened, though, the last thing you want is to regress. So you can maintain your results, you’ll need to take some precautions. Continue reading to learn what foods you should avoid immediately after having your teeth whitened!

Acidic Foods

After having your teeth whitened, the enamel (hard-outer layer) is temporarily weakened. Consuming highly acidic foods during this period can cause sensitivity to hot or cold foods or beverages.

Here are some examples of acidic foods you should avoid:

  • Tomatoes
  • Pineapples
  • Sauerkraut or pickles
  • Processed meats like packaged turkey, ham, roast beef, chicken or other options

Darkly Pigmented Sauces

The darker colored sauces are notorious for causing stains. You should especially avoid tomato sauce, mustard and any other darkly colored marinades that could affect your results.

Darkly Colored Fruits and Vegetables

If a fruit or vegetable is dark enough to stain a white shirt, you should probably avoid it immediately after having your teeth whitened.

Here are some of the more detrimental foods:

  • Beets
  • Berries
  • Grapes
  • Carrots
  • Cherries
  • Pomegranates
  • Purple cabbage
  • Dark leafy vegetables

The foods on the above list are highly nutritious and help support your total wellness. Thankfully, you only have to temporarily abstain from eating them. Within around 72 hours, you can reincorporate normal foods into your diet.

Beverages That Stain

In addition to watching what you eat, pay attention to the types of beverages you consume. Coffee, juices, red wine and soda are some of the worse options when it comes to stains and discoloration. Additionally, they are typically high in sugar, which can be detrimental to your oral health and dental aesthetics. On the occasions that you choose to indulge, it’s best to use a straw.

Why You Should Take Your Dental Hygiene Seriously

In addition to avoiding stain-causing foods and beverages, it’s of the utmost importance to make it a habit to practice consistent and proper dental hygiene.

Here are some ways to protect your smile:

  • Brush your teeth at least two times a day.
  • Floss at least once a day to remove plaque that settles between your teeth.
  • Rinse your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash at least once a day to further aid in the removal of bacteria.
  • Drink plenty of water. Not only does it keep your body hydrated, but it also helps to flush away leftover debris and bacteria.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings so that any developing issues that could compromise your smile can be identified and treated.

Professional teeth whitening can do wonders for your smile. Not only can it improve your appearance, but it can also boost your self-confidence. With a little planning, your new appearance can last much longer!
