Veneers are one of those cosmetic treatments whose results speak for themselves. When you see the difference that these thin shells of porcelain can make to the shape, color, and alignment of your smile, it’s hard not to want to try them for yourself.
However, you may have heard that veneers can make your teeth a little bit sensitive. If you want to know whether you should be worried, here’s some information you may find useful.
Why Do People Worry About Sensitivity?
People worry that their teeth will become sensitive due to the process of removing enamel that comes with placing veneers. While veneers are thin, they are large enough that if your dentist just placed them on your teeth, they would be a little bit noticeable. For that reason, your dentist will take off a sliver of your enamel to make room.
Enamel protects the interior layers of the tooth, which is largely composed of nerve tissue. Losing that enamel could, in theory, lead to sensitivity to heat or cold.
Are The Concerns Valid?
While the prospect of removing your enamel is understandably intimidating for some people, getting veneers shouldn’t make you all that concerned about sensitivity. Ideally, the porcelain should take on the protective role that the enamel once had.
It’s common for people to say that their teeth are fairly sensitive for the first week or so while they adjust, but any tenderness that you have to deal with will fade fairly quickly.
How to Deal with Sensitivity
Thankfully, managing any discomfort you feel should be fairly easy. Rely on a little bit of over-the-counter pain relief to deal with the symptoms when they bother you.
You may also want to refrain from eating or drinking things that can exacerbate your sensitivity, at least for a few days. If you notice that a certain food or drink is irritating, take pain relievers as directed and try swapping the food for something a little more gentle.
