Bad Habits to Avoid with Dentures

Your new set of teeth can last for many years with the correct care. However, simple mistakes can cause you to need replacements sooner. Here are 4 habits you should break to get the most from your investment.

1. Sleeping with Your Dentures in Your Mouth

Your dentist will instruct you to wear your new dentures for 24 hours, but then you need to remove them every night. No one wants to be caught without their teeth, but your oral and general health rely on nightly removal.

Dentures restrict blood circulation to your gums, which can lead to inflammation, tenderness, and infections if the soft tissues aren’t given time to recuperate. Your mouth is also a hotspot for oral bacteria that can cling to your dentures. Not only can this lead to unpleasant odors, but it can also damage your prosthetics and cause health issues, like respiratory infections.

It’s best to remove your dentures before bed and place them in an overnight soaking solution after cleaning them.

2. Relying on a Denture Adhesive

A denture adhesive can come in handy if you need a little extra stability for a speaking engagement or when enjoying a juicy steak. However, it’s not something you should rely on to stop slipping and irritation. Not only can this increase your risk of oral injuries, but your denture can break over time.

Instead, visit your dentist regularly for alignments. They’ll ensure a snug fit to ensure your dentures fit comfortably for years.

3. Not Cleaning Your Dentures

Dentures can’t get cavities, but that doesn’t mean you can stop brushing and flossing. Food particles and plaque can build up on your new set of teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste or mild dishwashing liquid to clean your dentures after eating.

You’ll keep your pearly wise looking their best while investing in a healthy mouth and body.

4. Skipping Routine Dental Care

Even if you don’t have any teeth remaining, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to see your dentist every 6 months. They will check your mouth to look for anything concerning, like irritation or signs of oral cancer. They will also clean and adjust your dentures to ensure your smile lasts.

Breaking bad habits can promote the lifespan of your dentures, but they will need to be replaced, eventually. If you’re interested in a longer-lasting solution, ask your dentist about adding dental implants to your smile.
